Question to U.S NSF Senior Computer Scientists Delegation and their answers (根据回忆整理大致意思,未经当事人确认) Qiang Lv: For a professor, he/she is facing the challenges from both industry and academy. Industry job market requires your students to be well-developed enough that they can be immediately put into their enterprises' working projects. But academy insitutes require creative research ideas and achievements for the students, which are usually totally different from the industry. Since you are all headers of top computer departments, how do you evaluate your professors? If a professor is good at research but not hot for the industry job hunting, while another professor is good at teaching what the students are expecting just for the popular job fair, how do you rank these professors if you have to? Martha Elizabeth Pollack (U of Michigan): Fred Stephen Roberts (Rutgers Univ.): Mary Louise Soffa (U of Virginia): Xiaodong Zhang (Ohio State U):
